Johnson City Medical Center recognizes the importance of each skill set of these areas and seeks to work together in order to provide our customers the best possible care. Providing trauma care is a unique and highly complex system than includes pre-hospital, hospital or acute care, outpatient management and rehabilitation services. Our trauma team provides immediate care to injured patients 24 hours a day, including: Johnson City Medical Center ranked in the top 5% nationally in Emergency Medicine by Healthgrades.

Serving Northeast Tennessee, Southwest Virginia, Eastern Kentucky and Western North Carolina, our Trauma Center is one of five Level 1 state-accredited trauma centers for Tennessee. They may admit mildly injured patients.Johnson City Medical Center features a rural Level 1 trauma center delivering the highest level of trauma care available within our region. Trauma centers are hospitals with resources immediately available to provide optimal care and reduce the likelihood of death or disability to injured. Level IV trauma centers provide enhanced care to injured patients within the emergency department and focus on stabilization and quick transfer to a higher level trauma center. They may admit patients with mild and moderate injuries. Level III trauma centers are smaller community hospitals that do not require neurosurgeons and focus on stabilizing severe trauma patients prior to transport to a higher level trauma center. Injured patients need treatment at the hospital best staffed and equipped to meet their special needs. Level II trauma centers meet the same high level of care but do not require research and residency programs and the following subspecialists: cardiac surgery, hand surgery, vascular re-implantation, oral/maxillofacial surgery, otorhinolaryngological surgery, neurology, physiatry and psychiatry. Level I trauma centers provide the highest degree of resources with a full spectrum of specialists and must have trauma research and surgical residency programs. In Pennsylvania, there are four levels of trauma centers. They are not intended to replace the traditional hospital and its emergency department for minor injuries. Accredited trauma centers must be continuously prepared to treat the most serious life-threatening and disabling injuries. The Trauma Services team at Berkeley Medical Center provides expert care for critically injured patients in one of the states three Level III Trauma. The PTSF is the organization responsible for accrediting trauma centers in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation (PTSF) is a non-profit corporation recognized by the Emergency Medical Services Act (Act 1985-45). As of May 2020, the Trauma Care System consists of 87 trauma centers designated at their respective level based on staff and resources: 4 Level I Trauma.
